Pinkerton Box Tops Fall 2019 - Due Oct 4th

9/22/2019 5:15 pm

Dear Families,

The time has come to send in your BOXTOPS clippings. This week, your student will come home with a Flyer to glue on your BOXTOPS. Please send in the rest of your clippings in an envelope or Ziploc bag. Clippings are due by Friday OCTOBER 4th

Remember to download the new APP BOXTOPS for Education and earn rewards instantly by scanning your receipts. BOXTOPS clipping will be phased out soon. For now, we can scan our receipts and still clip the BOXTOPS to “double dip” during this transition phase. Let’s maximize our earnings for Pinkerton.

September 16, 2019

Guidance classes are in full swing. Caring and kindness were the topics in Kindergarten and 1st grade classes. In both grade levels, I loved sharing one of my favorite books, “The Recess Queen.” It is so rewarding to see the kids connect how the recess queen was turned around with one simple act of kindness. Mean Jean the recess queen was asked to play! She was included! Of course, we tied
that to the “I” in our Pinkerton Pride – “include others”. For our new families, our PRIDE stands for P – practice responsibility, R-remain safe, I – include others, D – display respect and E – engage in learning.

In grades 2-5, we talked about the “learning ready brain” and watched a six minute video that helped us see that making healthier choices for our bodies and brains makes us happier, kinder and better able to engage in learning. Below is the link to the video we viewed.

https://vimeo.com/221019140

After viewing the video and discussing it, I asked each person to reflect on the eight things on the video to identify an area they may need to address in their lives in order to come to school learning ready. I then tallied all of their responses. The results are in and the areas that were most self-identified are: limit screen time, sleep, breathe/relax, teamwork and water. The video mentions
that 10 hours of sleep a night is ideal! I will be working on the breathe/relax, and teamwork items in upcoming lessons.

Please feel free to contact me if I can help you in any way. My email is kkirkley@coppellisd.com and my phone number is (214) 496-6812.

September 2, 2019

Greetings to all! I had such a nice time visiting with many of our wonderful parents at curriculum night! It looked like a good turnout!

In July, the CISD Professional Learning Department hosted a two-day conference for staff members on social emotional learning. Presenters at the conference offered activities, tools and information geared toward helping our learners with their social and emotional needs. With levels of anxiety, depression and suicide increasing in our young people, it was a timely and relevant conference. Many of our staff members attended and are implementing many of the ideas presented
at the conference. More to come about that.

I would like to make you aware of an upcoming, free conference on anxiety. Information about the half-day conference, titled “Just Breathe” can be found on the link below. It is Saturday, September 7 from 8-12. The conference is in Argyle, not too far from us. If you plan to attend this free conference, please register so that you may get all of the informational packets.

https://wtf-winningthefight.org/event/just-breathe/

Winning The Fight is hosting an anxiety workshop providing methods, alternative treatments and hands-on instructions to help overcome anxiety. We will be Screening the documentary Angst, starring Gold Medalist, Michael Phelps prior to the workshops. Visit Angstmovie.com to see the trailer (Appropriate for ages 10 and up)

Please feel free to contact me if I can help you in any way!! My email is kkirkley@coppellisd.com and my phone number is (214) 496-6812. Have a wonderful week!

Pinkerton Box Tops Fall 2019

8/24/2019 10:06 am

Dear Families,

The Box Tops for Education program is changing the way we can earn cash for our school! Over the summer, participating brands have begun to change their packaging from the traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Tops label.

Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt.

If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home, make sure to send them to school. We will still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire. Better yet, you can “double dip” during the packaging transition by clipping traditional Box Tops AND scanning your store receipt containing participating products. Thanks for helping our school get what it needs!

August 19, 2019

Hello to all and welcome back for an exciting new year! For our families who are new, my name is Kathy Kirkley and this is my 16th year as a school counselor at Pinkerton. If you drop off at the east loop in the mornings, you will find me there. I have lived in Coppell for 37 years and I have two children. Ryan (29) graduated from CHS in 2009 and obtained a business degree from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. He is a firefighter/paramedic for the city of McKinney. My daughter, Lauren (21) is starting her senior year at Texas A&M! Gig ‘em Aggies!

I received my bachelor’s degree in psychology, minoring in biology from Texas A&M and my master’s degree in counseling from UNT. I taught 7th grade life science when there was only one middle school in Coppell! Interestingly, several of our wonderful parents are former life science students of mine! Of course, I was very young when I taught.

I found this article a few years back and decided to make it a tradition! Certainly, we are always excited to hear about the school day from our children. In my own family, I think I finally resorted to bribery to get my son to share just 3 things about his day. My daughter, well, quite the opposite. I excitedly listened as she shared every detail about every activity she did that day and more! If you would like to hear more beyond, “ok”, “good” “fine” etc., please check out this link for “25 ways to ask your child about their day”. The list is quite clever! Of course, we can all ask, “tell me one way you were KIND today or how was someone KIND to you today.”

CISD News update 8.19.19

CISD Student Handbook and Code of Conduct Available Online
The CISD Board of Trustees approved the 2019-2020 Student Code of Conduct during the July 22 Board Meeting. This document guides student expectations of behavior in an effort to maintain a safe and productive learning environment for all students.

The Student Handbook sets forth guidelines for operating within the CISD schools. In it, you will find the staff and parent commitment to collaborate together for each child's success, basic campus operations information and attendance guidelines. There are two laws that guide attendance in school. We recently updated our attendance practices within the district to better align with the compulsory attendance laws. Please take a moment to review these standards. It is important that our students are present at school, as some aspects of student learning cannot be recreated. Consistent attendance in school is directly linked to academic success. Our school schedule has some naturally built in holiday vacation days throughout the school year to allow for family travel. Aside from these dates, travel and trips are considered to be unexcused absences. Both the Student Code of Conduct and the Student Handbook, as well as the CISD Dress Code, can be found at www.coppellisd.com/policies.

Dates Set for CISD 2019-2020 iLead
Want to know more about Coppell ISD? Applications are now open for iLead, a five session leadership training opportunity designed to help parents and community members gain insight into the operations of Coppell ISD, learn more about district service opportunities and build capacity for future Board and committee leadership. The cost to participate in iLead is $50, which helps defray district expenses such as t-shirts, training materials, food, etc. Visit www.coppellisd.com/ilead for more information and session dates and to apply to participate. To confirm your spot, please complete the application and bring exact cash or check payable to Coppell ISD (at the Vonita White Administration Building) no later than Friday, Sept. 6.  Limited seating and selection will be on a first-come, first served basis. All confirmed participants will be notified by Monday, Sept. 9.

Safety and Security Procedures for 2019-2020 School Year
CISD is implementing additional safety and security procedures for the 2019-2020 school year in order to ensure the safety of our students, teachers, staff and campus visitors.  These are:

  • When the front doors of our schools are unlocked during the school day, visitors and volunteers must be buzzed into the front offices to check-in before entering the school.
  • As in the past, all visitors and volunteers must check-in at the front office through the Raptor system.  All visitors and volunteers must bring a photo ID to check in, and passports are accepted. Please visit www.coppellisd.com/Domain/3443 for details.
  • All volunteers must complete our new background check application at least one week before volunteering.  Visit www.coppellisd.com/volunteer or see the article below for more information.
  • In anticipation of home football games at Buddy Echols Stadium, additional security measures are in place.  All visitors to football games may be subjected to wanding with handheld metal detectors. Purses will be limited to clutch style bags, no larger than 4.5” x 6.5.”  No backpacks will be allowed, as was the case last year. All bags are subject to search. This site has additional information on Buddy Echols security procedures https://coppellathletics.net
