You're Invited! | FIRST Pinkerton Parent Book Club
11/24/2019 7:33 pm
WHO: All Pinkerton Parents are invited!
WHAT: A Book Club! We will read The Gift of Failure by Jessica Lahey Modern parenting is defined by an unprecedented level of over protectiveness: parents now rush to school to deliver forgotten assignments, challenge teachers on report card disappointments, mastermind children’s friendships, and interfere on the playing field. As teacher, journalist, and parent Jessica Lahey explains, even though these parents see themselves as being highly responsive to their children’s well-being, they aren’t giving them the chance to experience failure—or the opportunity to learn to solve their own problems. (From the back cover)
WHEN: January 23, 2020 | 6:30pm
WHERE: Pinkerton Elementary School Library
WHY: We are committed to our CISD Core Values at Pinkerton! We believe that by coming together to read and discuss valuable topics related to raising children today we will positively impact our children through our collective engagement, relationships with one another, and how we redefine success of our children.
The Gift of Failure is on the NYC Bestseller List, has received numerous awards & positive reviews, and other CISD parent book clubs have read & recommend this book.
HOW: You may purchase this book through Amazon or any book store. Please read the book on your own by the meeting date (1/23/20). The book club will be facilitated by Mrs. Hunt (librarian) and Mrs. Mikkelsen.

Metrocrest Services laundry soap drive was a success! Thank you to our student council for heading up this drive and thank you to everyone who donated! Metrocrest picked up our donations this week and they were very appreciative. Our donations will help stock their food/supplies pantry.
Global Citizens for the first 9 weeks were celebrated on October 29 with a morning reception. They were also recognized at our first spirit assembly where we were able to get a picture! The bulletin board in the front hallway has a picture of each Global Citizen, along with a write-up that explains why each student was chosen. In some classes, the Global Citizens are chosen by their teacher; in other classes, they are chosen by their classmates. All our chosen based on how they model the IB profile, in addition to being kind and caring.
If you have any questions or if I can help you in any way, please contact me at kkirkley@coppellisd.com or 214 496-6812.

Red Ribbon Week was a huge success! It gave us a chance to not just talk to our learners about saying "NO" to drugs, but we also were able to speak about the healthy choices that they can make NOW.
Getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, being kind, setting short and long term goals, the many choices we have when dealing with a bully, and handling disappointment, anger, frustration and anxiety in a healthy way.
If they start making healthy choices now, those choices will turn into healthy habits as they grow older and are confronted with what can at times be life altering decisions. We hope that you were able to participate in the Parent Call to Action side of our week as well.
On that note, I truly believe that arming our kids with knowledge is the most important thing we can do. Telling them to "just say no" without an explanation does not equip them with the ability to make an informed decision.
Last year, participating in the Shatterproof 5K walk/run provided us with the perfect opportunity to continue the conversation.
I know many of you have told me that you plan on joining us (Team Tommy) in Dallas on November 16th for the Shatterproof 5K walk/run.
Last year it was so amazing to see nearly 80 kids, parents, teachers, friends and members of our community out there running, walking or cheering us on!
Every registration to run gets a 2019 Team Tommy shirt! Not able to make it?? Any $30+ donation gets one as well! We are making a few subtle changes to this year's shirt, but it will still be the same bright green....Tommy's favorite color!
Google doc to follow! If you just want to head on down with the 2018 shirt and hang and cheer you can do that as well!! All are welcome!

Thanks in advance! The support we have received from our Pinkerton family has been truly amazing!

A huge THANK YOU to PTO Health and Welfare mothers, Mary Tanner and Lacy Frenzel for all their work on our Walk to School day and our Red Ribbon Week activities this month. Walk to School day is one of my favorite things as we start the day with a little exercise, fellowship with our friends, parents, teachers and Coppell Police officers, and a healthy snack! The kids enjoyed the apple slices as they happily arrived to school after their walk! It was a fun morning for sure that encouraged us to make those healthy choices!
Our Red Ribbon Week activities this week continue our focus on health, safety and making good choices for our bodies and our brains! I have begun teaching the district’s curriculum “Too Good for Drugs”. This program, designed by the Mendez Foundation is a grade appropriate prevention program that teaches skills for living healthy, drug free lives. The skills taught include: goal setting, decision making, effective communication, peer pressure refusal, identifying and managing emotions, stress management, understanding the safe use of prescription and OTC medicines and the effects of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. Many of the skills taught in this drug prevention program are aligned with our current guidance curriculum. Parent involvement is an important part of the program as the
foundation reports that children are twice as likely to learn, remember and use these skills when their parents are involved! You will see bright yellow “Home Workout” sheets from time to time which will provide opportunities to reinforce the skills at home, while having some special time with your child/children to talk about these important topics.
Pinkerton will begin collecting laundry detergent for Metrocrest Services the week of 10/28 – 11/1. Collection boxes will be near the library doors. Metrocrest is an amazing resource for families in need in our community. Let’s help them stock the shelves with detergent!
As always, if you have any questions or if I can be of assistance, please feel free to contact me at kkirkley@coppellisd.com or 214 496-6812.

CEF Give for Grants campaign
10/19/2019 7:34 am
The Give for Grants Program is designed to encourage, facilitate, recognize, and reward effective, innovative, and creative, instructional approaches that directly impact students while transforming classroom learning.
This year, YOU can go to www.Give4GrantsCISD.org and view all classroom grants submitted by Coppell ISD educators. YOU can see who submitted a grant request, what they want to fund and at which campus. And then YOU can select which grant YOU want to fund!
Choose a school, select a grant, donate and make an impact today!
Below are specific grants for Pinkerton (click here to give online):
"5th Grade iFLIES!"
We would like to take our 5th grade learners to iFly to participate in one of their STEM science lessons. On the field trip the learners will have an opportunity to have hands-on exploration opportunities with various science concepts and will learn more about pursuing a career in the STEM field from very knowledgeable learning guides. They will also all be able to participate in an individual 2 minute “flight” in a wind tunnel.
"Where the Bookstore Comes to You"
4th grade teachers are needing a rolling cart to hold all of our fabulous new literacy book club sets for our grade level that were purchased for us this year. We want to keep them in a central location for easy accessibility.
"Check, check 1, 2, 3 - Podcasting for language learning"
We are requesting 5 PC Microphones, 5 Apple Lightning Adapters, and 2 Aokeo Professional Studio Recording Microphone Isolation Shield to be able to record high-quality publishable podcasts to be shared with our educational, local, and global communities. Educators of all grade levels will have access to the portable recording studios as they wish to develop content, address topics of need, etc. in their lesson design and implementation

We are almost at the end of our first nine weeks, which means it will be time to celebrate our first Global Citizens! At the end of each nine weeks, two learners from each classroom are chosen for modeling the IB profile, demonstrating kindness and respect towards others and for behavior that helps create a better and more peaceful world! In most of the classes, the teacher chooses their Global Citizens. In some of the upper grades, the learners nominate and vote on their citizens. The learners chosen for this honor are celebrated by having a write-up, along with their picture on the bulletin board in the front hallway. In addition, parents are invited to attend a short reception before school where Mrs. Mikkelsen congratulates them and presents them with a certificate. They are also recognized at the spirit assembly at the end of each nine weeks.
In the next several weeks, I will be including some helpful information about childhood anxiety in this newsletter. Below is an article you may find interesting.

Despite the fact it still feels like summer, the holidays will be here before you know it! Sometimes, these special days create added stress for some families, especially if there are financial difficulties due to a job loss, medical expenses, or other reasons. There are resources that can help! Please contact me if these resources would help your family with the added holiday expenses.
Please feel free to contact me if I can help you in any way!! My email is kkirkley@coppellisd.com and my phone number is (214) 496-6812.
