Guidance classes are in full swing. Caring and kindness were the topics in Kindergarten and 1st grade classes. In both grade levels, I loved sharing one of my favorite books, “The Recess Queen.” It is so rewarding to see the kids connect how the recess queen was turned around with one simple act of kindness. Mean Jean the recess queen was asked to play! She was included! Of course, we tied
that to the “I” in our Pinkerton Pride – “include others”. For our new families, our PRIDE stands for P – practice responsibility, R-remain safe, I – include others, D – display respect and E – engage in learning.

In grades 2-5, we talked about the “learning ready brain” and watched a six minute video that helped us see that making healthier choices for our bodies and brains makes us happier, kinder and better able to engage in learning. Below is the link to the video we viewed.

After viewing the video and discussing it, I asked each person to reflect on the eight things on the video to identify an area they may need to address in their lives in order to come to school learning ready. I then tallied all of their responses. The results are in and the areas that were most self-identified are: limit screen time, sleep, breathe/relax, teamwork and water. The video mentions
that 10 hours of sleep a night is ideal! I will be working on the breathe/relax, and teamwork items in upcoming lessons.
