Announcing CISD’s New Volunteer Background Check System

New for the 2019-20 school year, CISD is using a new application and background check process for all volunteers in the District using the same software used for employee background checks.  In order to upgrade the security of your personal information, you will be required to fill out a volunteer application (setting up a new secure user name and password) and background form.  This user name and password will be used again each year you complete the form.  Volunteers are a valuable part of our educational team, and we appreciate all you do!

Please follow these steps to complete your Volunteer Background Check:

  1. Visit www.coppellisd.com/volunteer
  2. Click on “Volunteer Application and Background Check Forms”
  3. Then, follow the “New User? Click here to register prompts.” Note, everyone is a new user in this system and MUST set up a new account.  Previous Coppell ISD logins and passwords will not work with this new system.  Once you set up an account, you can use this user name and password each year for your Volunteer Background Check.
  4. Click on “Add New Application” under “Online Applications.”
  5. Under “What type of position are you applying for?,” Click on “Volunteer.”
  6. Click on each tab on the left side of the page and submit the information requested.  You must click on each tab to complete the process. Please note you can select multiple campuses for which you would like to volunteer.
  7. Click “Submit” to submit your application.
  8. Be sure to complete the application/background check a week in advance before you volunteer.

Interested in helping in the office or classroom of your child's school on a regular basis? Are you accompanying or chaperoning a group of students on a field trip, weekend camp outing, helping with PTO events, or chaperoning at a dance? To be eligible to volunteer on any of the CISD campuses, you must complete a Criminal History Background Check. Only ONE form is needed per volunteer each year, even if volunteering for multiple campuses or students. A Criminal History Background Check must be completed EACH school year for all volunteers. Please make sure you have completed the form a week in advance before you volunteer.

PE Updates 2/17/19

2/17/2019 9:29 pm

Speed Stackers

On Monday we had a representative from Speed Stackers come and present to our PE classes!

The kids loved it! We had a great time making connections between the left and right side of our brains and improving our eye-hand coordination.

Just 20 minutes of speed stacking can improve focus in the classroom. A large number of our learners purchased their own set of cups from me this week, enabling us to get an entire class set for free to use as part of our PE program!

I still have a couple of sets left if your child is interested! Speed Stacking is an awesome alternative to screen time and can be done anywhere!

If your family is interested in attending a Speed Stacking tournament to see what the sports side of it is all about, click here for the Dallas area tournament coming up in March!

Kids Heart Challenge

I am so excited to announce that Pinkerton not only met our goal of $8,000, but we surpassed it, earning just over $10,000 for the American Heart Association!

We had a super fun Valentine's Day Extravaganza in the gym to celebrate!

Thank you so much to everyone who participated this year! Not only did we earn money for research, awareness and education, but the Pinkerton PE program earned over $800 to purchase equipment for our gym! Yippee!!

Pinkerton Running Challenge

The list of Pinkerton Runners who are crushing their goals is growing!

I am so proud of everyone who is participating and setting themselves up for a lifetime of healthy habits! Check out the Pinkerton Running Challenge bulletin board outside the gym and see who is on track to earn a medal at our end of year Awards Assembly!

Why should kids run?

Here are 6 reasons why.

Boundary Realignment Update

CISD hosted community forums on Boundary Realignment Jan. 10 at CHS9 and Jan. 16 via Facebook Live. Officials shared a presentation on the Boundary Realignment scenarios, Elementary Plan A2 and Middle School Plan B3, being recommended to the Board of Trustees. CISD officials also shared information on instructional programs and “grandfathering” plans, as well as answered questions from attendees. The fourth Board Workshop on Boundary Realignment will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. The Board will consider and adopt the final Boundary Realignment Model at its February 25, 2019 meeting. Details about the boundary realignment process can be found at www.coppellisd.com/realignment. The CISD community can share additional feedback on the process by emailing input@coppellisd.com.

Reminder: Board Workshops are held for the purpose of allowing CISD Board of Trustees to receive more information, and discuss and debate pending matters with CISD staff and amongst themselves before taking a formal vote at a later date. However, since no action is being decided or taken at a Board workshop, there is no “Open Forum” or other opportunities for the public to address the Board during a Board Workshop. Those wishing to address the CISD Board of Trustees during Open Forum at a  regular monthly Board meeting must follow the guidelines as outlined at www.coppellisd.com/Page/13268. These include: those wishing to address the Board must fill out an information card between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and submit it to the Administrative Assistant to the Board. Board members are not allowed to answer questions or concerns posed by individuals during Open Forum; speakers are limited to three minutes; and, if there are five or more individuals who wish to speak on the same topic, they must designate one spokesperson to speak on their behalf.

Strategic Design Core Values Audit Deadline Extended
Phase 2 of CISD’s Strategic Design effort is underway and is focused on identifying specific opportunities to fully realize our Core Values developed in Phase 1 of the process.  As we move forward, we must ensure we’re focused on the highest priority opportunities. Therefore, your feedback is again needed and we are inviting all our stakeholders (students, parents, employees and community members) to provide input about the campus or campuses in which your children attend via this audit www.coppellisd.com/corevaluesaudit. This audit takes about 15 minutes to  complete and must be completed in one sitting. This feedback is a critical part of this process. Additional details and phases of our Strategic Design process can be found at www.coppellisd.com/strategicdesign. Thank you for continuing to help shape the future of our wonderful district.

It's Time Texas Community Challenge
Living Well in Coppell is once again locally sponsoring the 2019 It's Time Texas Community Challenge. This statewide wellness initiative, which runs from Jan. 7 to March 3, pits Texas cities of similar size against each other as they find fun and easy ways to demonstrate their commitment to healthy living. Coppell participated and won its size category for numerous consecutive years. In 2018, the City of Harlingen outpaced Coppell and claimed the top spot. If Coppell can once again clinch first place, the city will not only be recognized both regionally and statewide as a healthy community, but the city will also receive $1,800 to distribute to CISD schools for health and wellness programs.

It's easy to participate in the Community Challenge:

  1. Visit ittcommunitychallenge.com and register as a Coppell participant.
  2. Take a selfie doing something healthy or track your fitness.
  3. Upload your photos and activities to your account to earn points for the community.

CISD Our Story Magazine
CISD is pleased to announce the inaugural issue of the district’s “Our Story” magazine. This magazine was launched in an effort to ensure our CISD community is informed and engaged and is made possible in part due to the financial support of several local businesses and community partners, who placed advertisements in the publication. Be on the lookout for copies of the magazine at our schools, local businesses, and other locations throughout the Coppell, Irving and Dallas communities we serve.  You also can access the magazine online via https://www.coppellisd.com/Page/15897.

Healthy Zone News from Ms. Michaelis

9/30/2018 9:10 pm

Oct. 1, 2018

I have exciting news!

Our school has been selected to join the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and The Cooper Institute’s Healthy Zone School Program!

This program is designed to recognize schools that have excellent health and to support schools looking to improve health programming. Schools are invited to participate in the program for three years after going through a competitive selection process. School selection is based on the school’s physical activity programs, nutrition policies and health education and services.

Schools are eligible to receive $6,000 over a three year period for physical education equipment and/or health and nutrition related materials, and activities!!

Healthy kids have 1) better academic performance, 2) better attendance and 3) better behavior.

Teaching kids healthy habits in school, where they spend most of their day, can help them make the most out of their time in school. I will be sending out helpful hints, celebrations and even healthy recipes in our newsletter and our Pinkerton Facebook page.

Together we can help families lead healthy, responsible lives.

Visit HealthyZoneSchool.org for more information!

Pinkerton Plank Challenge

9/30/2018 9:10 pm

Oct. 8, 2018

Pinkerton Plank Challenge

Our entire school community is welcome to participate (parents, learners, teachers and administrators) in our Planktober and Planksgiving Challenge!

Be looking in your learners Take Home Folder for a handy chart to set goals, keep track and stay motivated! Please initial the sheet each day and email pictures of your planking to cmichaelis@coppellisd.com.

We will have a special “Plankboard” outside the gym to celebrate participants! The class with the most finishers will receive an extra “Open Gym” time first thing on a morning of their choice!!

Why a Plank Challenge?

“Core strengthening is essential for the progression of other developmental skills. The core muscles
are the muscles in the abdomen, back, and pelvis, and are the center of control for everything the
body does. If your child doesn't have strong core muscles, balancing, performing coordinated
movements on both sides of the body, jumping, sitting up straight in a chair, and performing arm and hand tasks like holding a pencil and controlling scissors will be difficult.”

Here are the basic steps for performing a plank, from the American Council on Exercise:

  1. Hold your elbows, or hands, directly under your shoulders and place your wrists in line with your elbows.
  2. Push your body up into your upper back and hold your chin close to your neck (like you’re holding an egg between your chin and your throat).
  3. In this position, brace your abdominals—contract them like expecting a punch in your stomach, squeeze your gluteal (tailbone) and thigh muscles simultaneously while continuing to breathe normally.
  4. Hold a plank at least 20 to 30 seconds. (When using correct form, it is not necessary to hold it for longer than this amount of time.) Rest for approximately one minute and repeat three to five more times.

Start doing the plank using your elbows and toes (feel free to drop to your knees if necessary) and progress up to a high plank when you feel you have developed the necessary strength.

Happy Planking!!!
